How tax withholding works

Your employer holds back part of each paycheck and sends it to the IRS and your state. The amount depends on your pay, your filing status and what you put on Form W-4. Social Security and Medicare tax are fixed rates. Income tax withholding is an estimate of what you will owe for the year.

Frequently asked questions

How is federal tax withheld from a paycheck?

Your employer annualizes your pay, subtracts the standard deduction for your filing status, applies the tax brackets, and divides the result across your pay periods.

How do I withhold more tax?

Fill out a new Form W-4 and use the extra withholding line in step 4(c). Type the same amount into the extra withholding box above to see the effect on your paycheck.

Is withholding the same as the tax I owe?

No. Withholding is a prepayment. When you file, you compare what you owe with what was withheld. If more was withheld, you get a refund. If less, you pay the difference.

Why is Social Security tax missing from part of my year?

Social Security tax applies only to the first $184,500 of wages in 2026. Higher earners stop paying it once they reach that amount.
