Effective rate is your total tax divided by your income. Marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar of income.

Effective rate vs marginal rate

Your marginal rate is the tax rate on the last dollars you earn. Your effective rate is the average across all your income. Because the U.S. uses brackets, your effective rate is almost always lower than your marginal rate. Moving into a higher bracket only raises the tax on the income above that line.

Frequently asked questions

What is an effective tax rate?

It is the percentage of your total income that you pay in tax. You find it by dividing your total tax by your income.

What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?

The marginal rate applies to your next dollar of income. The effective rate is the overall average. A single filer in the 22% bracket usually has a federal effective rate well below 22%.

Does a raise push me into a higher tax bracket and lower my pay?

No. Only the part of your income above the bracket line is taxed at the higher rate, so a raise always leaves you with more money after tax.

Why do states change my effective rate?

State income tax is added on top of federal tax. Texas, Florida and Tennessee have none, while states like Georgia and Virginia take close to 5% or more of taxable income.
